Summary
The Trump administration is attempting to cancel a public lands rule that promoted conservation.
What's Happening
- Rule Making Process — In 2023, the Biden administration conducted a new rule making process for public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
- Rule Adoption — On April 18, 2024., it adopted the Public Lands Rule (officially known as the Conservation and Landscape Health Rule). This rule places conservation on equal footing with mining and grazing as a use of BLM lands.
- Move to Cancel — On September 10, 2025, the Trump administration formally proposed rescinding the Public Lands Rule. This has set off a public comment period which closes on November 10, 2025.
Why It Matters
- Wide Coverage — The Public Lands Rule applies to 245 million acres (about 10% of all US public lands).
- Overwhelming Support — During the initial rule making process, 92% of the 150,000 public comments were in favor of the Public Lands Rule
- Balanced Approach — The rule does not prohibit development of public lands. Instead it puts conservation on equal footing with mining, drilling and grazing.
