Summary

The Trump administration is trying to dismantle AmeriCorps - a cornerstone of youth service and conservation work in America. They've already taken major steps. But we can save AmeriCorps.

What's Happening

Dismantling By DOGE:  On April 25, 2025, DOGE cancelled $400 million in AmeriCorps grants affecting 1,031 organizations. This terminated service for 32,465 AmeriCorps members. In addition, 85% of AmeriCorps agency staff was placed on leave and ultimately fired.

Courts Intervene:  Multiple lawsuits followed. On June 5, a federal judged ordered the administration to reverse the cuts until a final decision is made in the courts. However, the ruling only applied to the 24 Democrat-led states and DC that filed suit. On July 8,  a federal judge ordered the administration to hire back AmeriCorps agency staff that had been laid off.

Congress Deciding:  Trump proposed ending AmeriCorps in his 2026 Budget Request. But Congress drafts the spending bills, which it currently is doing. The good news — the Senate version rejects Trump's proposed cuts and funds AmeriCorps at near-2025 levels. But questions remain whether Congress can agree on a spending bill and whether Trump will follow along.

Why It Matters

Americans In Service:  AmeriCorps is like the Peace Corps, but in the United States. Members dedicate up to one year of service to their country in exchange for professional development and a modest living stipend.

Wise Investment:  A 2020 report found that for every $1 in federal taxes spent, AmeriCorps returns $17 to society, program members, and the government.

AmeriCorps By The Numbers: In 2024, conservation corps—comprised mostly of AmeriCorps members—completed:

  • 19,662 miles of trails constructed or improved
  • 884,489 trees planted
  • 411,068 acres of fish and wildlife habitat restored
  • 108,425 acres of invasive species removed
  • 98,845 acres of hazardous fire fuels treated
  • 1,422 miles of waterways resotred

Public Backlash:  There has been outrage nationwide about the cuts. This includes in red states like West Virginia, Ohio, and Wyoming
